The National launched on St David’s Day, 2021, with a mission to be a new voice in Welsh media. We set out to be for all of Wales and to lead the news agenda.

Thanks to our subscribers, our reporters have scrutinised who is paying our MPs, besides the taxpayer; we’ve scoured historical records to challenge safety measures around coal tips; and investigated the potential impacts of the UK Police Bill in Wales. Our coverage of fears for the red squirrel population has helped lead to plans for a new law to protect them.

Our tagline is ‘For all of Wales’ and we have reported stories and issues from across the country, from the Mold cape, to the second homes crisis in our coastal areas and the affordable rents crisis in our cities.

How you can support Welsh journalism

As the editor, I am proud of the work our journalists have done. But there is so much more we want to do, and we need your support to achieve it. Throughout January, we are offering a 30-day free trial on both our monthly and annual digital subscriptions.

Subscribe here and choose the monthly or annual plan, then you’ll be prompted to add your email address and payment details.

Why subscribe?

Wales deserves a strong national media that reports the news from a Welsh perspective, written by journalists here in Wales. We created The National to help deliver that.

Quality journalism has never been more important and by subscribing to The National Wales, you are funding the journalists who produce that. Being supported by subscribers rather than solely reliant on advertising, enables us to invest time in research and writing important stories, not just the ones that will get the biggest audience that enable us to serve the most adverts.

Our plans for the year ahead

Our journalists will be concentrating on three key areas this year – Welsh culture and identity; independence, devolution and Wales’ future; and social justice and injustice. In addition, we will continue to cover the news from across Wales, thanks to Newsquest’s network journalists across all our local titles. We aim to produce some print special editions too, and we’ll keep you posted on those.

The more subscribers we have, the more we can do.

Diolch yn fawr.
