Wrecsam has been longlisted for UK City of Culture 2025. It is the only Welsh town on the list.

There were four other Welsh locations who had put bids forward but Newport, Bangor, Conwy and Powys all fell at the first hurdle.

Eight places in total have been unveiled by the UK Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Nadine Dorries.

Wrexham County Borough has been longlisted alongside the following places:

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon

Bradford

Cornwall

County Durham

Derby

Southampton

Stirling

Previous hosts have attracted additional investment to their areas and have also attracted additional thousands of visitors.

All bids were asked to explain how they would use culture to grow and strengthen their local area, as well as how they would use culture to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. For the first time, this year each longlisted place will receive £40,000 to support the development of their promising proposals.

The shortlist is expected to be announced early next year.
