A MAJOR sponsorship between Wrexham AFC and an American oil firm has been cancelled just weeks after it was announced.

The club announced on May 30 that Lucas Oil has signed as the club's official Oil Partner and new stand sponsor, the University end, in a two-season deal.

But today the US firm, which has its UK headquarters, on Ynys Mon announced it had “proactively withdrawn” from the sponsorship with the club owned by Hollywood pair Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

There had been some criticism of the deal due to comments previously made, and the political activity in the United States, of the company’s owners, the Lucas family. You can read why Wrexham fan Leigh Jones disagreed with the sponsorship deal here

In a tweet published this morning Lucas Oil UK stated: “Lucas Oil UK can confirm it has proactively withdrawn from its sponsorship deal with @Wrexham_AFC. The change in direction & withdrawal were accepted by the Club. These changes go into effect immediately. We wish the organisation continued success. No further comment will be made”.

The tweet has been re-shared by Wrexham AFC's official Twitter account.

The company is a supporter of grassroots football in the north Wales, having previously sponsored the Anglesey Football League, and teams in the Welsh Premier League, and at the time of the deal it was said Wrexham AFC joined NFL giants the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts in the company’s stable of sporting sponsorships.

The page on the Wrexham AFC website, which had announced the sponsorship, now just shows a 404 sign saying the page users were looking for cannot be found.

It was intended the The Lucas Oil Stand would bear the company’s logos for the next two seasons, through to the end of the 2023/24 campaign, and Lucas Oil would join Wrexham AFC’s list of official partners as the designated Official Oil Partner of the Football Club.

Fleur Robinson, Wrexham AFC CEO said at the time: “We are delighted to be welcoming another big-name international sponsor to the Football Club.

“Lucas Oil is a new partner of the Football Club, having not previously sponsored us, and join Macron and Wrexham Lager as stand sponsors at the Racecourse Ground.

“The club’s stated commercial approach is to secure sponsors from an international, national and local base. As an international company, with a North Walian headquarters, they meet two of these criteria.

“We are all looking forward to hearing our passionate and vocal supporters backing the team from The Lucas Oil Stand from next season.”

Wrexham AFC said there would be no further comment on the decision from the club.
